On the way back to Southampton, Jake stared at the USB stick.

‘Are you sure it’s all secure?’ he asked Lacey.

‘Every morsel. Yes. On three different clouds.’

Jake nodded. ‘Okay, and there’s nothing to worry about with the deliveries?’

‘Can’t see how. The emails are scheduled to go to SEROCU, the MET, and MI5. Also, if any of the deliveries do fall foul of a firewall then I added a bonus one. The local radio station in Salisbury! Details of at least one cloud is included in each email. If we don’t hit abort, they haven’t got a leg to stand on. Or a pot to piss in.’

‘And no chance that Madden can undo your work?’

‘What do you think this is? Amateur hour? Not only did I wipe all history, passwords, etc., but I also smashed the bitch’s motherboard to pieces with a hammer.’

‘The same hammer that you …?’ Jake creased his face.

‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So now we’re just relying on the bitch to set up the meet.’

‘She will. She has nothing to lose now. She stays alive if our bargain works. If she doesn’t contact them and those emails go out, Article SE is in a whole world of pain. And what you’ve just done to her will be the least of her worries.’

‘I hardly did anything,’ Lacey said. ‘It was ridiculously easy. Even you could have managed it.’

‘Doubt it. The first time she screamed, I had to step out for air.’
